The Big Apple

Built in 1915 as the House of Peace synagogue, the building was sold in 1936 and reopened as the Big Apple Night Club, where the dance craze that swept the nation during the summer of 1937 was born. Crafted by Columbia's African-American youth, the Big Apple dance eventually traveled to New York and attracted the attention of famed dance instructor Arthur Murray and songwriter Tommy Dorsey, who wrote "The Big Apple Swing." By 1938, however, the club had closed; the property was sold, and the dance was no longer popular. Abandoned in 1979, the former club was moved three years later from its original location at 1138 Park to its current siting at the corner of Hampton and Park streets. ​​

Downtown YMCA

The Downtown YMCA has been a cornerstone in Columbia’s community for over 150 years. Their new location opened up in 2016. We will be using two of their large studios for classes this year as well as for our Saturday evening dance. The venue is conveniently located downtown Columbia, so you won't have to travel far to find a bite to eat.

CMFA

Our late night venue for Friday and Saturday is the Columbia Music Festival Association’s space. Founded in 1897, the CMFA still serves as an arts incubator for the midlands region. Its current building is a renovated warehouse with ArtSpaces that serve the community for classes, workshops, events, and now late night lindy hopping. With sprung floors and a location right at the edge of the Vista, the CMFA is a perfect spot to dance til the wee hours. Visit cmfaonline.com for more information. ​
